If you have issues shrinking or have a VHDX with a lot of free space inside the VM but not on the host, more than likely you have a fragmentation issue.

I'm now prepared to do the conversion and shrink the disk! I started the defrag again and I had plenty of space, it went down a few GBs but nothing major. Once I started the defrag, the host disk started going down in space slowly, starting out at 100GB, by the time it hit 25GB I threw in the towel. It literally defragmented a 1.5TB drive in 2 hours. Finally moved back over to the host, dismounted the VHDX from Hiren's.and ultimately I settled on a software called Auslogics Disk Defrag inside the live VM with the disk mounted and VM on. It was able to fix my disk fragmentation but it took a long ass time to process everything. I went to tools, and discovered Defraggler. It failed to shrink because of disk fragmentation. I've tried the conversion and using Windows Partition manager which is AWFUL SOFTWARE DON'T USE IT.įinally spun up Hirens Boot CD as a VM and attached the VHDX to it, and I was able to get the disk shrunk, AOMEI partition manager to the rescue, or so I thought. Just wanted to inform everyone.if you have a thin provisioned VHDX and want to convert it to thick provisioned (fixed disk) this might help.
